General Reference
COLLECTIONS
The general reference collection focuses on current materials, with retrospective holdings in areas of particular interest to state government. It is strongest in the areas of education, business, public and governmental affairs, health, statistics and biographical information. Reference materials do not circulate, but selective photocopying may be done within copyright guidelines. Materials include:
- journal indexes
- newspaper indexes
- telephone directories
- biographical directories
- college catalogs
- stock, bond and mutual fund reports
- general and subject-oriented encyclopedias
- statistics
- atlases
An extensive back run of the Statistical Reference Index is maintained with accompanying microfiche.
A collection of test preparation books for a wide range of civil service job titles is also available. Test books may be borrowed for two weeks by State Library registered borrowers, however, they will not circulate to other libraries.
ELECTRONIC RESOURCES
Our print collection is greatly enhanced by online access to bibliographic, statistical and full-text databases covering most subject areas. For detailed information about these services see electronic resources. All databases are accessible from within the Library, and many are available remotely for State Library authorized users. Reference librarians are available to perform searches in Dialog by arrangement. Cost recovery fees may be charged back to state agencies if the search cost will exceed $25.00. Such searches for the public will always incur charges.
SERVICES
The staff provides extensive reference and information service to state government personnel. Reference services are available in person, by telephone, fax, letter, or e-mail. Books and journal articles not located in the State Library's collections may be obtained for state agency personnel through interlibrary loan. Research guides containing links to useful web sites are located on our web site. Our catalog is also available online. On-site assistance is extended to all users of the library, including the general public. Computers, microfiche reader-printers and photocopy machines are available.
