Microsoft Office Is Expensive! -or- Getting to Know Google 3: Google Documents This installment in the Google series discusses Google's free office suite that allows you to create and store documents, spreadsheets, and presentations online. Google Docs includes many of the same features as Microsoft Office but has the added bonus of allowing you to create PDFs, webpages, shared documents and forms easily. In this class, you will be introduced to Google Docs, learn how to create and edit documents, and experiment with some of the program's features. Time will be allotted for participants to use Google Docs during the class. Note: In order to use Google Docs, you must create a Google account. Participants are asked to create an account before the class by clicking the "Sign In" link in the upper right hand corner of any Google page and following the prompts for a new account.. Finding Your Ancestors at the Library This forty-five minute session is designed to introduce you to the Genealogy and Local History Collection at the State Library. You will learn about the library's most useful genealogical resources and find out where they are located in the library. The presentation will also include a brief introduction to what genealogy is all about and provide a few pointers on how to begin searching for your ancestors. Locating Grant and Funding Information in Foundation Directory Online Professional In this class, you will find out how to use the Foundation Center's premier research database for nonprofits. The Foundation Directory Online Professional (FDOP) provides detailed information on more than 92,000 U.S. foundations, corporate giving programs, grantmaking public charities and their awarded grants. Learn how to identify the funding sources that can help you achieve your organization's mission. Space is limited to 12 participants! Date: Will Duct Tape Cure My Warts? Exploring Complementary and Alternative Medicine Resources Complementary and alternative medicine can be defined as a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not generally considered part of conventional medicine . This class will be a general introduction to finding good, quality complementary and alternative medicine ( CAM ) information on the web. We will also review how to find articles with a focus on CAM in PubMed and in the Ebsco database Alt-HealthWatch. Getting to Know Google 4: Google Reader and Blogger Part 4 in the "Getting to Know Google" series will cover the steps in creating a blog using Google's service called Blogger and then subscribing to blogs written by other people using Google Reader. Blogger is an easy-to-use tool for sharing family, personal, or work news with the world using customizable templates. Security features are available if you only want certain people to read your posts as well. Google Reader allows users to keep track of frequently updated online content such as blogs, news websites, or any page that has an RSS feed (don't worry...we'll go over that as well). Note: In order to use Google Reader or Blogger, you must create a Google account. Participants are asked to create an account before the class by clicking the "Sign In" link in the upper right hand corner of any Google page and following the prompts for a new account.. Participation in the previous parts of "Getting to Know Google" is not necessary for registration in this class. Using Ancestry.com to Search U.S. Census Schedules: A Hands-on Workshop Discover the power of searching census records online using Ancestry, a major collection of online genealogy databases. Discover what census schedules will tell you about your relatives, and learn a few tricks to make your searching more effective. Space is limited to 12 participants! Date: You Can Find Me Online: An Introduction to Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, Twitter and Delicious You've heard about these popular sites, but are you still not sure what they are or whether you should join? This class will cover the basics of each online tool with information about who uses them, how they are used, and what benefit they bring to the public and users. We will discuss potential problems with sharing information through these websites as well as strategies for protecting your privacy online. The class is informational only and will not cover how to create an account. Space is limited to 12 participants! Date: Downloading Audio Books from Listen NJ Looking for something to listen to during your commute? No time to read? Try an audio book! This session is a step-by-step demonstration of how to download best-selling fiction and nonfiction titles 24/7 to a PC, laptop, or portable device at home or in the office. Please note: This class is limited to New Jersey state employees and Thomas Edison State College staff, students, and mentors. Space is limited to 12 participants! Date: Introduction to the Sanborn Maps at the NJ State Library Discover the New Jersey State Library Sanborn insurance map collection in database and paper formats.
