Services to People with Disabilities
People with disabilities have historically been underserved by libraries. As more information is delivered using computer and network technologies, libraries can play an increasingly important role in insuring equal access to information for people with disabilities. Contents:
Adaptive technology is computer software and hardware that has been modified to be accessible by people with disabilities. It offers people the opportunity to use computers to complete tasks that were previously not possible for them. To insure that people with disabilities can make effective use of library resources and related adaptive technology, library staff must receive training in the use of the equipment and on service issues involving patrons with disabilities. Libraries need to provide services and training in the use of the library and its resources that specifically meet the needs of people with disabilities. Equal Access to Information: Libraries Serving People With Disabilities provides an overview of the major topics that public and academic librarians need to be familiar with in order to provide services for people who are blind, have low vision, are deaf, hard-of-hearing or having learning disabilities.
