The RFPs listed below contain the guidelines and applications forms for new competitive grant programs. (In some cases guidelines and application forms may be available on this web page before library directors have received their copies in the mail.)

The RFPs are in PDF format which requires that you either have a copy of the free Adobe Acrobat Reader software installed on your computer or that you download it. This software allows you to view and print PDF files. To download a copy, click on the image below and follow the instructions to install Acrobat Reader on your computer.

This web page will contain PDF files for competitive grant programs only. PDF files for non-competitive grants programs will not appear on this page. Copies of non-competitive grant program RFPs must be requested from the Library Development Bureau.

Videoconferencing Center Program Grant (FY08)

The goal of the New Jersey State Library (NJSL) is to create a new level of access to communications for all public libraries in the New Jersey Library Network by implementing a videoconferencing network.  Through the strategic placement of four new videoconferencing centers in public libraries and a fifth one at the New Jersey State Library, the State Library intends to provide convenient access to meetings, training, educational and library programs. These grants are designed to serve the librarians and their customers at the community level by making available easy access to meetings and programs available through this technology.  The New Jersey State Library seeks to identify libraries that will commit to use the videoconferencing equipment for library,  library association and community meetings and programs as needed.  These grants will provide the equipment needed to host a videoconferencing center, the installation of the equipment and the training for use of the equipment.  Each recipient of a NJSL Videoconferencing Grant will be required to act as a resource to assist other New Jersey librarians to communicate through this network and as well as provide the staffing to operate the equipment and make it available to libraries and library groups from around the state.

Statewide Diversity Leadership Grant (FY08)

The New Jersey State Library announces that $100,000 in grant fuding is available to assist public libraries to develop diversity resources in local communities and throughout the state.

The grants are designed to help start, strengthen or expand programs to serve residents who may encounter difficulty using traditional library services due to such challenges as age, disabilities or language. In awarding these grants, the State Library seeks pilot projects that demonstrate innovation, that will serve as a model for other public libraries to replicate and that plan for sustainability beyond the grant period. The minimum grant award is $10,000 and the maximum award is $25,000.

"These diversity grants reflect the New Jersey State Library's on-going efforts to enhance and expand the capacity of public libraries to meet the challenging and growing needs of the state's residents and their communities. The commitment of the State Library includes using its staff and resources to administer the grant. Ultimately we hope the awarded grants will provide model diversity programs that other public libraries can follow to better serve their communities," emphasized Norma E. Blake, New Jersey State Librarian."

Public Library Literacy Leadership Program Grants (FY08)

The New Jersey States Library announces that $200,000 in grant funding is available to public libraries to develop literacy skills in local communities throughout the state.

The grants are designed to assist public libraries in starting, strengthening or expanding programs in areas such as family literacy, financial literacy for immigrants or teens, English as a Second Language and English for speakers of other languages. Program proposals may include one-on-one or group literacy instruction, but the key criteria that the New Jersey State Library seeks in awarding these grants are pilot projects that demonstrate innovation and will serve as a model for other public libraries to replicate, and sustainability beyond the grant period. The maximum grant award is $20,000.

“These literacy grants reflect the New Jersey State Library’s on-going efforts to enhance and expand the capacity of public libraries to meet the challenging and growing needs of the state’s residents and their communities. The commitment of the State Library includes using its staff and resources to administer the grant. Ultimately we hope the awarded grants will provide model literacy programs that other public libraries can follow to better serve their communities,” stressed Norma E. Blake as New Jersey State Librarian.

Grant Application for Adult Basic Literacy and ESL Materials

The New Jersey State Library partnered with New Jersey Verizon, Verizon Telecom Pioneers and the Verizon Foundation to sponsor a Walk for Literacy to support Adult Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) initiatives in New Jersey Public libraries.

All proceeds from this event were used to purchase a general selection of adult basic literacy and ESL materials. If your library already has an ESL collection or program, or you are thinking about starting one, Verizon and the NJSL would like to send you this special collection of materials.

All public libraries that qualify for Per Capita State Aid may apply for this grant by submitting the attached application form. The New Jersey State Library will send literacy kits to the first 100 public libraries that apply. Applications will be accepted through March 31, 2007, or until all kits are given out.

The New Jersey State Library would like to thank Matthew Mitchel, Outreach Services Coordinator of the Bergen County Cooperative Library System, for his help and guidance in the selection of these materials.

Please complete the one page application, briefly telling us why you need these materials in your library, and how you will use them in your community.
