Re: New Jersey Knowledge Initiative

Time is running out. The New Jersey Knowledge Initiative is not included in the FY2007 budget for the State of New Jersey and may end. This is to inform you of the status of this program and how it may affect your library. I hope you are aware how the NJKI benefits your library, and will discuss this situation with your staff.

Current status: All New Jersey Knowledge Initiative database licenses are presently funded and will continue to be available through June 30, 2007. This includes four major JerseyClicks databases costing $2.25 million for the current contract: ReferenceUSA, Ebsco Academic Search Premier, Ebsco Business Source Premier, and Ebsco Regional Business News. Attached is a helpful list of all the NJKI databases and their specific license expiration dates.

If the NJKI is not funded in the FY2008 state budget, all databases funded by the NJKI will be discontinued at their expiration date. Therefore, I am advising all libraries to consider and plan for this contingency when developing your library's budget for either calendar year 2007 or FY2008. We will work with the Regional Library Cooperatives and VALE to explore negotiation of vendor discounts.

You can help keep these databases. Later this summer, you will begin receiving information about advocacy activities to continue funding the New Jersey Knowledge Initiative. The New Jersey Library Association, your Regional Library Cooperative and VALE have been major contributors to this effort. The State Library coordinated a wide range of advocacy activities and legislative visits this spring. All parties are committed to continue this campaign, but it will not be enough. I urge you to ensure your library's participation in every NJKI advocacy activity.

WHAT I CAN DO TO HELP KEEP NJKI:

NJKI Talking Points

What is NJKI? NJKI connects entrepreneurs, small businesses, researchers and students to millions of top science and technology journal articles and key business information. Biotech, high-tech and small business companies throughout the state are partnering with the New Jersey State Library, members of the New Jersey Library Network and the academic community to use the New Jersey Knowledge Initiative.

How does NJKI work? NJKI is designed to spur economic growth and strengthen high-tech initiatives by providing free, unlimited and convenient access to high-end, proprietary resources in the fields of science, medicine, technology and business. This is information not available for free on the Internet or at bookstores. The $6 million, state-funded program is the first of its kind in the nation. $2.25 million of resources went directly to New Jersey's public libraries.

Who benefits from NJKI? Small companies, researchers and entrepreneurs in New Jersey competing globally in the fields of biotechnology, high-tech, and other science- and medical-related industries, colleges and universities statewide, legislative staff and state agencies served by the New Jersey State Library, and the more than 2,000 member libraries of the New Jersey Library Network and the people they serve.

New Jersey Knowledge Initiative Database List

The New Jersey State Library is happy to announce the availability of several new databases through the New Jersey Knowledge Initiative. Academic Search Premier, Business Source Premier, Regional Business News, and ReferenceUSA join the list of statewide JerseyClicks databases currently offered free onsite at public libraries and from home by entering a valid public library card barcode.

The databases listed below are available via: a) walk-in onsite access for the public at 48 academic libraries, b) onsite and remote access for: library staff, faculty, and students of 50 VALE colleges and universities; State Library staff and state agency employees; and selected small biotech and high-tech startup companies (ex. tenants of business incubator campuses):
