Conferences and Workshops
IMLS/ LSTA Conference State Librarian Norma Blake was one of three panelists at Institute of Museum and Library Services/Library Services and Technology Act Conference that was held in Washington D.C. Norma enumerated the many ways that New Jersey has been able to increase marketing awareness for NJSL and LSTA and IMLS sponsored programs and how we are able to leverage additional partnerships and funding from our Federal grants. The discussion gave New Jersey the opportunity to present many of it programs to a national audience. Norma, accompanied by LDB Director Jeff Kesper and LDB Deputy Director Kathi Peiffer, also attended workshops to learn about LSTA and IMLS grant opportunities and reporting requirements. jkesper@njstatelib.org

Grants information
Prime Time Grant The Prime Time grant applied for last month was not awarded to New Jersey. Kathleen Peiffer is requesting comments from the review committee so that NJSL may compile a more compelling grant application next year.
Gates Foundation Grant Programs Much time and attention was given this month to the final preparations for the first program in the Gates Staying Connected Grant, which will be on the topics of computer security and technology planning to be held on December 2 and 6. These workshops are being co-sponsored by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
Continuing Education Opportunity Kathleen Peiffer coordinated a new continuing education opportunity offered by the Gates Foundation. One State Library staff member and two public librarians in New Jersey serving small and rural communities will have all their expenses paid to attend a pre-conference on Promoting Public Libraries as well as the conference itself. The assistance of Karen Hyman and Joanne Roukens was invaluable in publicizing this opportunity to librarians in their region. Kathleen Peiffer will be coordinating the arrangements with the Gates Foundation and attending the program with the librarians.
Update: The two public librarians chosen to attend the conference are Debbie Maynard of Butler Public Library and Sharon Furgason of McCowan Memorial Library.
IMLS Recruitment Grant Kathleen Peiffer is the interim grant administrator until a new project specialist is hired. This month she reviewed the previous administrator’s files for items that needed to be handled; emailed students and libraries with responses to their questions; solicited the necessary information from our grant partners for the second year report on this grant and working with the partners on the formation of a new grant application. kpeiffer@njstatelib.org

Marketing and Outreach November was a month of Conferences with the NJSL promoting its services at two major conferences back-to-back. Teachers attending the New Jersey Education Association Conference had the opportunity to learn how JerseyClicks can help them in their classrooms. Scherelene Schatz , Cindy Warrick, Sharon Rawlins and John Cooper worked the booth. Bonnie Kunzel was a panel participant at one of the many NJEA presentations.
Members of the New Jersey Library Association joined NJSL staff members, Teri Taylor, Peggy Cadigan, Carol Yoest, Tina Keresztury, Scherelene Schatz, John Cooper, and Cindy Warrick at the League of Municipalities Conference in Atlantic City. The theme centered on how libraries can help municipalities find funding opportunities. Brochures reflecting the theme were created and distributed. Staff informed people about grant and funding possibilities for municipalities as well as how JerseyClicks can help municipalities find up-to-date information to find successful solutions for problems facing their communities.
The NJSL newsletter,Impressions and the Annual Reports were mailed.
Companies were awarded bids for the NJKI Marketing package and the New Jersey Public Library Construction Bond Calendar for 2006. With the NJKI marketing package including posters, bookmarks, and a brochure, expectation is high that these media items will inform, educate, and evoke a good response from NJ Small Businesses, libraries and their customers.
New Jersey State Library programs and services were presented to at least 10,000 individuals this month by informing, educating, updating, or introducing them to services the State Library offers. Individuals were notified through one-on-one conversations and mass mailings of well-designed, informational pieces. ndowd@njstatelib.org

Site Visits LDB Consultants have been building a personal communication network while visiting libraries throughout the state. The feedback from libraries has been overwhelmingly positive. Expanding on that concept New Jersey State Librarian Norma Blake and LDB Director Jeff Kesper are meeting with small groups of library directors for informal chats. This month Norma and Jeff met with about twenty librarians from Sussex and Warren Counties to discuss issues and concerns and to hear about the NJSL and its three branches. Later in the month Jeff met with three directors from Bergen county Oradell, Emerson and Haworth Public libraries.
Norma and Jeff visited the Newark Public library to experience the renovation and tour the rest of the facilities and then met with Gian Hasija, Director of the Bloomfield Public Library, and two of their board members prior to the ribbon cutting of the newly renovated Children’s room. Norma, Gian and Jeff were interviewed by the local press. jkesper@njstatelib.org
