Suggestions For Participation
- An Evening Of Programming For The Community: An evening
of programming at the library would provide an appropriate venue for the community to
gather in honor of the day. Suggested program ideas are listed below.
- Readathons: Invite members of the community including local politicians, community
leaders, teachers, firefighters and other luminaries to read at your library.
- Talks: Invite local authors, poets, media professionals and religious leaders to speak.
- Cultural Events And Performances: Showcase the diversity of your community!
Coordinate performances or exhibitions of local cultural and artistic organizations. Ask
community residents to contribute ethnic dishes.
-
Displays: Create displays of your collection around one or
more of these topics, tying them in with the value of
libraries to community and democracy:
- Freedom of expression
- Celebration of diversity
- Preservation of knowledge
- Promoting understanding
- Fostering citizenship and democracy
- Guaranteeing freedom of access to information
- Stay Open For 24 Hours: Many libraries across the country are choosing to stay open and provide regular services for 24 straight hours, beginning 12:01 am, September 11th. Libraries across the nation, standing with their doors wide open, will serve as a remarkable symbol of freedom. Your first thought may be, “That’s impossible.” May your second thought be, “Let’s do it anyway.” If your library is unable to remain open for 24 hours, consider having some open hours on September 11th.
