Record of the Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Civil War, 1861-1865
Description:
A searchable online version of William Stryker's compilation of records of officers and men of New Jersey in the Civil War. The data are largely composed of tables indicating dates of service and comments about individuals who served with specific military units - although there is a body of descriptive text as well.
Because we anticipate that a large proportion of searches submitted against this database will be "NAME" searches, we have elected to make the default search operator be NEAR. The reason for this is that the NEAR operator is bi-directional and ideal for NAME searching in the sense that it will work whether the user enters searches in the form "first-name last-name" or "last-name first-name".
The records of the database consist of the pages that comprised the original printed volumes. A fully linked table of contents (starts at page three) and a fully linked index are included among the pages. The bottom of each page contains links which allow you to navigate directly to the table of contents, to go to the next or previous (physical) page in the volumes, to return to the "Search" screen, to re-do "Database Selection", or to browse online help.
Database fields: Title, Header, Text, Names. Though the database is fielded, it is not anticipated that the fields will be of particular help when formulating search strategies.
