these values are provided for elements, macronutrients, and vitamins.

- A searchable database from the
U.S. National Library of Medicine on dietary supplements sold in
the U.S. Search by brand, active ingredient or manufacturer. Links
to PubMed for information on adverse effects or mechanisms of action.
- Food
and Nutrition Information Center
- The USDA web site has links to
information for a wide range of nutritional topics. Access to its
databases covering topics such as dietary supplements and food
safety.

Pyramid - USDA
- Explore the new food pyramid and
dietary guidelines at the United States Department of Agriculture
web site.
- Food
and Nutrition Center- MayoClinic
- The MayoClinic has very clear and
informative health sites and this one gives an overview of general
daily requirements for good health. Discusses carbohydrates, protein,
fats, cholesterol, fiber, vitamins and supplements.
- Micronutrient
Information Center - Vitamins, Minerals, etc.
- This resource from the Linus Pauling
Institute at Oregon State University, contains detailed information
about vitamins and minerals. This information includes the function
of the micronutrient, intake recommendations, food sources, role
in disease, deficiency, and toxicity. The site also provides information
about selected other nutrients, selected phytochemicals, and foods
(ex. tea, nuts, legumes).
- Nutrition.gov
- A service of the National
Agricultural Library. Provides abundant information on food,
weight management, meal planning, and food assistance programs.
- The
Nutrition Source - Knowledge for Healthy Eating
- Excellent site from the Harvard
School of Public Health's Department of Nutrition. Focus is on
a variety of nutritional topics. The editorial board of this site
includes professors of nutrition, epidemiology, immunology, and
cardiovascular disease prevention. This site does not just reiterate
the current conventional nutritional ideas - for example check
the "Food Pyramids" link to see a new concept for a better
food pyramid.
- Overview
of Nutrition - Healthy NJ
- The HealthyNJ site from UMDNJ (University
of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey) provides a description
of the process of consuming nutrients. This site also has links
to New Jersey-specific resources and other recommended web sites.
- Weight Control
Information Network- NIDDK
- A very helpful and comprehensive
site from the National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney
Diseases (NIDDK) provides publications on a variety of topics related
to nutrition, physical fitness, and reaching and maintaining a
healthy weight. Topics include weight loss surgery, binge eating
disorder, healthy eating and physical activity across the lifespan,
and helping your overweight child, among many others.

- A biochemical look at energy production

- This comprehensive site from the
Centers for Disease Control covers topics such as the importance
of physical activity, components of physical activity, getting

training for older adults, measuring physical activity intensity,

Activity and Health: A Report of the Surgeon General
- This is a lengthy report with detailed
information about physiolgic responses to exercise, and the effects
of exercise on health and disease.

from other Agencies is also very useful and provides a wealth
