Search Engines

Search the web, news, pictures, videos, MP3 files and FTP files.
AltaVista
A large search engine featuring advanced Boolean searching and date ranging.
Ask Jeeves
Enter a question in plain English and Ask Jeeves returns a list of similar questions. After users select the closest match, Ask Jeeves takes them to a site that answers the question.
Daypop
A current events search engine.  Indexes news sites and weblogs.
Excite
Search web sites, directories, news and photos.
FirstGov
Official gateway to federal government websites, services and online transactions.  Find information from U.S. local, state and federal government agency websites.
Google
Search the web, images, Usenet groups or the directory feature. Includes advanced search, preferences and language tools.
HotBot
Searches the full text of documents in its large database. Ranks retrieval by relevance. Can refine search, limiting retrieval by date, language, media type, technology or domain.  Advanced search feature allows Boolean searching.
Lycos
Search the web or specific portions of it.
Teoma
Results consider authority as well as relevancy.  Offers suggestions on refining your search, and includes a resource section that refers to websites created by enthusiasts and experts.
WebCrawler
Search the web, news or photos. The zoom in feature refines your query by producing a list of related terms.

The Argus Clearinghouse
Provides topical guides to rated Internet resources.
Infomine
Intended for faculty, students, and research staff at the university level. Contains highly useful Internet resources including databases, electronic journals, electronic books, bulletin boards, listservs, online library card catalogs, articles and directories of researchers.
Librarian's Index to the Internet
A directory of annotated Internet resources arranged by subject.  The index is browsable or searchable by keyword in subject, title or description.
LookSmart
Explore the web using a list of broad subjects that allow you to zero in on more specific topics, finally generating a list of web sites for you.  Also has a search feature that allows you to input terms.
The Open Directory
A web directory edited by people, it is arranged by subject.
The WWW Virtual Library
The oldest catalog of the web, it is a respected subject guide to the Internet.
Yahoo!
A browsable subject guide to the web. Yahoo also allows keyword searching.

How far is it?
Calculates the distance between two places using latitude and longitude data from the U.S. Census and a supplementary list of international cities.
Map Blast!
Retrieve a map using address, area code and exchange, domain name, latitude and longitude, or airport codes.  Other options include driving directions and favorite destinations.  Requires registration.
MapQuest!
A consumer travel site. Provides maps, driving directions, trip planning aids and more.

Provides information on licensed physicians in the United States.

A comprehensive listing of world telephone directories online.

SuperPages.com
U.S. businesses are searchable by name and type of business. Includes a distance search feature which locates similar businesses within a selected distance, and a detailed search mode.  Includes SuperPage links for Canada and Puerto Rico, as well as a link for Spanish.

Telephone Directories on the Web
Index of international telephone directories. Choices differ from country to country, but generally include white and yellow pages.
The Ultimate White Pages
Provides a common interface to search six different phone number directories: Yahoo, WhoWhere, Switchboard, AnyWho, InfoSpace and Whitepages.com.  Can also search by phone number and for maps.
West Legal Directory
