IV. Web sites

Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services
Formerly the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Immigration services and benefits such as naturalization, asylum, lawful permanent residence, inter-country adoptions, forms and fees, regulations, field offices, and a special "How Do I....?" section have all transferred to the new agency.  Enforcement activities have transferred to the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Travel, international adoption, passport, and visa information. Includes directories and links to US embassies and consulates as well as the Visa Bulletin and  Foreign Affairs Manual. For immigration and naturalization information and directories see: Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services.
Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (FDAC)
Handbook & directory of available federal grants.  Searchable and browsable access.  Includes the Federal Commons with access by grant topic.
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
The Medicare, Medicaid and SCHIP agency which replaces the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA).  Features consumer, professional and public affairs access points.  Information by program and topic also available.  Includes search capability and statistics, reports, regulations.
Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)
Codification of the general and permanent rules published in the Federal Register by the executive departments and agencies. Now includes browse feature.
Consumer.gov
One-stop link to a broad range of consumer information sources available online.  Subject links to related federal websites are available. Links on frauds and privacy concerns including the Consumer Sentinel. The Consumer Action Handbook provides consumer tips and an assistance directory with names, addresses, phone numbers, and websites for consumer organizations.  A National "Do Not Call" Registry is coming soon.
Copyright Office
Basic copyright information, how to file, hours of service and location, forms, and fees.  Also provides search access to copyright records from 1978 on.
DefenseLINK
The main web-site for the Department of Defense. Includes links to the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and National Guard. Also includes the Defense Almanac, which provides a variety of information and statistical material on DOD people, organization, equipment, and funding, including a DoD Defense Base Structure Report listing military installations world-wide by branch and by state.
EnergyFiles
Virtual library of energy science and technology.  The DOE  Information Bridge with full-text DOE reports is available at this site.  PubScience has been discontinued.  Alternative sources are Energy Citations Database with bibliographic records for energy related information; Infotrieve which searches a broad range of scientific and medical journal citations and abstracts; and Scirus which covers a broader range of scientific information beyond journal literature.
Environmental Protection Agency
Regulations, contracts, data, directories, reports. Includes a ZIP Code Search which matches ZIP codes with EPA databases.
FedBizOpps
Single source for federal government procurement opportunities over $25,000.  To search without solicitation number by using keywords and or classification codes click on Find Business Opportunity under FBO for Vendors. Replaces Commerce Business Daily (CBDNET) as of January 1, 2002.
Federal Bulletin Board
Free electronic bulletin board service of the Government Printing Office. Provides public, self-service access to electronic files from various executive and judicial agencies.
Federal Register
Executive agency regulations, rules, notices and orders 1995 to present, precursor of the Code of Federal Regulations. It  includes a browse feature; html  links are now embedded in html pages; pdf pages are also available.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Home Page
Reports, directories, regulations, notices. Includes a Site Index for easy access to various components such as FDA Consumer Magazine.
Government Accountability Office (GAO)
Performs audits, surveys, investigations, and evaluations of federal programs. GAO Reports and Testimony are available by title, subject, or number  from GAO or by key word search access via GPO from1995 to present.
Geological Survey (USGS)
Geological and mapping data and products with ordering information.  Includes the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).
Health & Human Services, Department of
Parent agency for health, safety and social welfare agencies. Services are grouped by topic and includes a group of reference resources such as dictionaries and statistics.  Has a kids page with facts and activities as links to other government web pages for kids.
Homeland Security, Department of
Provides preparedness information for citizens, business, and government agencies.  Latest information on emergencies and disasters, threats and protection, travel and transportation, and available research and technology.  Main public website for the new department; among the components are the Customs Service, the reorganized Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Secret Service, and the Coast Guard.
Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
Public and private housing and community development including funding sources. Includes information for citizens, the housing industries, and others.  Provides access to handbooks, forms and publications.  HUDCLIPS, a related service provides similiar access including search capability.
Immigration and Naturalization Service
Replaced by the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Internal Revenue Service
Taxpayer information, forms, instructions, regulations, electronic filing services, refund status, tax statistics and more.  Includes tips on scams and unscrupulous preparers.
Justice Department
Parent agency for criminal justice and legal affairs; immigration matters have been reassigned to the Department of Homeland Security. Includes reports, statistics, funding information, fugitive information, terrorist attack information and kid's pages.
Labor Department
Responsible for a variety of work related programs.  Access is by topic, audience, organization and popular items.  Includes the Bureau of Labor Statistics which collects and analyzes labor and economic statistics.
Medicare.gov
Medicare information for consumers. Provides search tools for facilities and providers, basic medicare information, plan options, and publications.
National Academy Press
Publisher for the National Academies, national advisory agencies on science, engineering, and medicine. Includes full-text versions of over 2,500 reports as well as a catalog and ordering information.
National Archives and Records Administration
Redesigned website provides information about the National Archives experience, includes a "where is it"..."how do I" index as well as search capability. The Research Room leads to government records and how to access them.  A new feature is the Access to Archival Databases (AAD) which provides online access to selected electronic records.  The Genealogy page leads to research facilities, online information, publications, census information, guides, etc.  Current laws, regulations, and documents are at the Federal RegisterPresidential Libraries leads to libraries, presidential papers and more.
National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information (NCCAN)
Resource for professionals on the prevention, identification, and treatment of child abuse and neglect. Includes publications, statistics, online databases and directories, funding and prevention resources, and links to related sites.  Library Search, abstracts for resources from other organizations.
National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS)
Clearinghouse of criminal justice information including online services, inquiry services, publications, and an extensive NCJRS Abstracts Database from the 1970's on.  It also includes the NCJRS Virtual Library providing full-text from NCJRS and sister agency websites.
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Health information and scientific resources. Links to institutes and grant opportunities.
National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
Weather, oceanic, fisheries, coastal services, charting and navigation, climatic reports, data and statistics. The National Climatic Data Center provides web access to many of their climatic products including such popular publications as "Climatological Data" and "Hourly Precipitation" by online subscription or order.  Passworded free access is available to NJ State Library users on site.
National Technical Information Service (NTIS)
Searches over 500,000 records since 1990 in the NTIS collection of technical publications, datafiles, CD-ROMs, and audiovisual materials. Fee based access of over 2 million products back to 1964 with subject, author, agency, and date indexes is also available.   Products may be ordered from NTIS.
Office of Management and Budget
Overseer of the federal budget and its administration in federal agencies. Includes the text of OMB documents such as circulars and bulletins with instructions and guidance on the administration of federal funds.  Provides access to budget documents on its own site and through GPO.
Patent and Trademark Office
Information about patent and trademark services, how to file, fees, searching, patent and trademark depository libraries. Expanded database searching for patents citations and full-text from 1976 is available. Trademarks are also searchable.  Independent inventors may want to check out a new site just for them.
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)
Information for investors and financial professionals as well as regulatory information and litigation and enforcement updates.  The EDGAR database provides documents filed by companies with the SEC.
Surgeon General, Office of
Leading spokesperson on public health appointed by the President.  Full-text versions of the Reports of the Surgeon General are available at:  http://sgreports.nlm.nih.gov/NN/
United States Government Manual
Encylopedia of government agencies including their legal basis. Includes key documents. Both searchable and browsable, 1995 to present.
Veterans Affairs
Information on veterans services, benefits, and programs; includes online applications. Includes  veteran data and information with statistics on social, economic, and geographic information.
White House Home Page
Access to the President, Vice President, and White House information.  Your Government allows both searching and direct access by federal agency. News & Policies has news and expanded information about presidental policies and efforts. History & Tours provides history and virtual tours of the White House as well as  historical information and biographies relating to former whitehouse occupants.
Whitehousekids.gov
Provides information on  past presidents and historical characters,  history of the White House, a history quiz, whitehouse pets, and child friendly biographies of the President, Vice President and their wives.  Kids Connection provides speeches and activities by President and Mrs. Bush relating to children.
ZIP Code Lookup & Address Information
ZIP+4 code lookups and city-state/ZIP code associations and address information from the US Postal Service.
