TBBC Receives Jamie Hilton Award

“A Celebration of Partnership and Progress” commemorated the 100th anniversary of the NJ Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CBVI). During the event, which was held in Iselin on October 27, the NJ State Library Talking Book & Braille Center received the Jamie Hilton Award, in recognition of promoting awareness of the abilities of people with visual impairment, ADA accommodations (including assistive technology), and employment opportunities for qualified individuals with disabilities.

The Souvenir Journal distributed at the event acknowledged TBBC:

The NJ State Library Talking Book & Braille Center (TBBC), formerly known as the Library for the Blind and Handicapped, provides library service by mail or online to NJ Veterans and residents of all ages who cannot easily read standard print materials. Keeping up with technology, TBBC began distributing the new digital talking book machines that offer our customers amazing sound quality and the ability to download thousands of books from home.

TBBC helps connect people with print disabilities with the technologies they need to help them read both at work and home. TBBC bridges the information gap between people with print disabilities and the print media by providing alternative access to New Jersey and national news via TV and the Internet. TBBC creates opportunities for life-long learning and literacy through free provision and promotion of accessible materials.

“Helping New Jersey residents who cannot see the words in a book or hold a book to read is the cornerstone of our library,” said Adam Szczepaniak (second from left), director of TBBC, in accepting the honor. Sharing the moment are, from left, Vito De Santis, executive director, New Jersey Department of Human Services’ Commission for the Blind & Visually Impaired; Jamie Hilton, past executive director of CBVI; and Marshall Klein, president of the Fund for the New Jersey Blind, which sponsored the event.
