Register in person for a library card if you are

  • A New Jersey resident age 17 and older
  • Anyone employed in New Jersey age 17 and older
  • State university employees
  • College students attending school in New Jersey

Registration must be done in person, at the Library circulation desk at 185 West State Street, Trenton, NJ.

Documents accepted

  • Proof of New Jersey residency such as
    • A valid New Jersey driver’s license or state-issued photo ID
    • A current utility bill or lease for a New Jersey residence plus a state-issued photo ID
  • Proof of New Jersey employment plus a valid state-issued photo ID
  • Either a valid New Jersey college ID (with photo) or a college library card plus valid state-issued photo ID

Benefits of a NJ resident library card

  • use of computers and databases while visiting the State Library
  • borrowing of one item from selected collections

We encourage all New Jersey residents to register for a library card from their local public libraries.  Local library membership typically includes access to books, movies, music, eBooks, databases, and other services. New Jersey residents and public libraries also have access to statewide databases from Jerseyclicks.


Borrower responsibility for print materials

Borrowers are responsible for any items not returned to, or received by, the library.

Borrowed material must be picked up in person at the State Library, and returned directly to us in person or by mail. While we accept returns by U. S. mail, the borrower is still responsible for any mailed returns that are not received by the library.
