State Government

The New Jersey State Library borrower’s card provides access to many special services as well as to specially licensed databases that are available only to New Jersey state employees in the three branches of state government: executive, legislative and judicial.  Our newsletter for state employees highlights resources of interest.

Obtaining a Library Card:

In order to take full advantage of State Library services, state employees should obtain a State Library card. Upon registration, a State Library card will be issued, and must be used when borrowing State Library materials, placing interlibrary loan (ILL) requests, or accessing databases remotely.

Borrowing Books from our Collections:

Circulating items from our collections are available on loan to registered State Library borrowers. Materials will be sent to you via interoffice mail unless you specify that you wish to pick them up. You may place your request through the catalog Request Item feature, or through ILLiad. If you need assistance with a request, email or call Reference at 609-278-2640 ext.103.

Requesting Photocopies and Articles from our Collections:

The Library can provide photocopies from materials within our collections in accordance with copyright guidelines. You will need a State Library borrower’s card to establish an ILLiad account before placing your request through ILLiad. If you need assistance with a request, email or call Reference at 609-278-2640 ext.103.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL):

We will place ILL requests with other libraries in the United States for work-related books and articles that we do not hold in our collections. Photocopy requests must comply with copyright guidelines. In order for us to maintain ILL privileges with other libraries, please be aware that you are responsible for any fees charged by the supplying library for lost material, including items lost in transit between you and the State Library.  You will need a State Library borrower’s card to establish an ILLiad account before placing your request through ILLiad. Research:

The collections and resources of the New Jersey State Library are selected to serve the needs of state government. Reference librarians are available to identify and locate materials, conduct literature searches, perform research, or provide research guidance. Databases:

The State Library subscribes to many databases that support state government activities. All databases may be used onsite at the library. Most are also available for remote searching from your office. A New Jersey State Library card is needed for remote access.

Public PCs:

Public computers are available on levels 3 and 4 of the library for walk-in customers. You may also make an advance reservation.

Thomas Edison State University

The New Jersey State Library borrower’s card provides access to many special services as well as to specially licensed databases that are available only to New Jersey state employees in the three branches of state government, and to Thomas Edison State University staff and students.

Obtaining a Library Card:

Thomas Edison State University staff, students and mentors may register as borrowers with the State Library. Upon registration, a State Library card will be issued, and must be used when borrowing State Library materials, placing interlibrary loan (ILL) requests, or, in the case of staff and students, accessing databases remotely.

Borrowing Books from our Collections:

Circulating items from our collections are available on loan to registered State Library borrowers. Materials from our collections will be mailed to you, if you reside in the continental United States, unless you specify that you wish to pick them up. Students and mentors may have up to five items out on loan.  You may place your request through the catalog Request Item feature, or through ILLiad. If we do not own an item you need, we can request it from another library using the interlibrary loan system. Photocopy requests must comply with copyright guidelines. Students and mentors are required to pick up books at the Library’s circulation desk; however staff can receive books by interoffice mail.  In order for us to maintain ILL privileges with other libraries, please be aware that you are responsible for any fees charged by the supplying library for lost material, including items lost in transit between you and the State Library.  We will not place interlibrary loan requests for course textbooks. Photocopies obtained via ILL will be sent to all TESU requestors. Students and mentors will be asked to pay any copyright or interlibrary loan fees associated with a request. You will need a State Library borrower’s card to establish an ILLiad account before placing your request through ILLiad. Databases:

The State Library provides access to a wide array of databases. All databases may be used onsite at the library. Most are also available for remote searching by TESU staff and students. A New Jersey State Library card is needed for remote access.

Mentors have very limited remote access to State Library databases, but can use databases available in TESU’s MyEdison Portal.

Libraries

Borrowing Books from our Collections:

Circulating items from our collections are available via interlibrary loan. Search our catalog to determine if the State Library owns an item you need, or to determine the extent of our holdings on a particular topic. See Does it Circulate? for more information.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL):

The State Library accepts requests via OCLC and JerseyCat, or by ILL form emailed to lending@njstatelib.org or faxed to 609-278-2651. The Library does not accept walk-ins with interlibrary loan forms.

Photocopy Services:

New Jersey Network Libraries receive up to 50 pages free per request. Out-of-state, or non N.J. network members will be charged for the service unless they are members of LVIS (Libraries Very Interested in Sharing) or government libraries. All such requests must be submitted via interlibrary loan. See our interlibrary loan service for libraries web page for more information.

Research:

The New Jersey State Library provides reference assistance to the libraries of New Jersey. Our Law, N.J. Documents, Jerseyana, U.S. Documents, Funding Information and Genealogy collections have been designated as statewide services collections. See the About Our Collections page for contact information and details about the Library’s collections.

Databases:

The State Library subscribes to a number of databases specifically for the use of all citizens of the state. These databases may be accessed via JerseyClicks, by anyone with a library card from their local New Jersey public library, or the State Library.

The State Library Information Center also subscribes to many additional databases that may be used onsite by anyone who visits the library.

The Public

The New Jersey State Library borrower’s card provides residents of New Jersey with access to JerseyClicks, a portal of databases specially licensed for state residents. It also allows you to borrow books from our collections, and to use JerseyCat, a statewide interlibrary loan (ILL) system.

Obtaining a Library Card:

New Jersey residents, and those employed in New Jersey, may register as borrowers with the State Library. Non-residents may purchase an annual membership which affords borrowing privileges from our collections. Registration must be done in person, at the Library circulation desk at: 185 West State Street, Trenton, N.J.

Borrowing Books from our Collections:

Circulating items from our collections are available on loan to registered State Library borrowers. Up to five items may be borrowed. Materials must be picked up and returned at the Library. We will not mail materials. If you do not live or work in the Trenton area, you may wish to consider borrowing our materials through your local library’s interlibrary loan service. This allows you to pick up and return our materials at your local library.

The Library can provide photocopies from materials within our collections, for a fee, within copyright guidelines. Use the photocopy request form.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL):

New Jersey residents who are registered borrowers of the New Jersey State Library may use JerseyCat to initiate interlibrary loan requests for materials not held at the State Library. We will request books and journal articles from other libraries as long as the materials can be obtained at no cost. Books will be borrowed from libraries in New Jersey.  One book may be borrowed at a time. Books must be picked up at, and returned to, the State Library. Borrowers are responsible for any late or lost book fees charged by the supplying library.
