Services

Getting a Library Card

NJSL provides library cards, and specialized services through the Talking Book and Braille Center (TBBC), to eligible New Jersey residents with visual impairments, reading disabilities, or physical limitations. State employees and Thomas Edison staff and students need a library card to use many of the Research Library’s services.


Library Catalog

The State Library’s Catalog helps users locate a wide range of print and digital resources to meet their research needs.


Librarian Assistance

NJSL offers personalized librarian assistance to support your research and information needs. Whether you have a research question, need help locating resources, or wish to request library materials, our expert librarians are here to guide you every step of the way.

Research

NJ State Research Library

The NJ State Research Library offers a comprehensive selection of books, databases, and digital collections. Special collections feature New Jersey history, culture, and government.


Electronic Resources

NJSL offers a wide range of electronic resources designed to support research, learning, and professional development. While anyone can visit the library to use these resources in person, remote access available for authorized users with a library card.


NJ State Library Digital Collections

One of the Research Library’s mission is to facilitate public access to state government information. Through preservation and digitization, we seek to expand access to vital New Jersey collections.


Genealogy

The NJSL Genealogy collection includes over 18,000 items in print or microfilm. Our collection includes resources for all over the United States and even some international resources, so you may follow your New Jersey ancestors out of the state! Start your journey today.


Legal Research

The NJSL Law Library provides an array of resources to support personal, academic and professional legal research through digital collections, databases, and specialized materials.

The NJ State Library and Talking Book and Braille Center will also be closed on Monday, February 17, 2025 for Presidents Day.
