Talk on William Penn in New Jersey

Please join us on Tuesday, October 8th to celebrate the 375th anniversary of William Penn’s birthday as reenactor Erik Burro talks about Penn’s impact on New Jersey as a kickstarter and dealmaker.

Born on October 14, 1644, Penn is better known for his time in Pennsylvania. He was a principal signatory to the Concessions and Agreements of the Proprietors, Freeholders and Inhabitants of the Province of West New Jersey in 1676, five years before becoming Proprietor and Governor of Pennsylvania and Delaware. Also, he was a major influencer in the emergence of civil rights, representative government and religious freedom in early America. Recognized for the  role he played in preparing colonists in America for eventual independence from Great Britain, he is one of eight individuals to whom the U.S. Congress has granted Honorary American Citizenship.

Erik L. Burro is a historian, photographer, reenactor and founder of the Pennjerdel House, a regional advocacy for increasing public awareness and appreciation of local history and preservation throughout the tri-state area. While most of his business career was spent in corporate communications, he has simultaneously pursued a host of projects involving research, exhibitions, presentations and dramatizations of state, regional and American history. In the past 40 years, Erik has made a variety of appearances as a guest speaker, master of ceremonies, host for cultural events, reenactor of historic characters both here and abroad, and a creator and participant in exhibitions on history-related topics. Penn is one of the characters Burro reenacted in five countries and 12 states. He has also been involved with local media as well as NPR and the BBC.
