New Jersey was the last northern state to enact any type of emancipation law and was one of the last states to ratify the 13th Amendment, initially rejecting it 1865. As a result, New Jersey’s unique place in the history of slavery and emancipation created a distinct environment for historical and genealogical research during the 19th century.
