As library staff, we understand the challenge of having amazing programs, resources, and services, but a limited budget to promote them. Fortunately, creating eye-catching and professional social media graphics isn’t just reserved for those with a design background when you have the right tools. Canva bridges the gap between those with no graphic design experience and expensive tools. This beginner-friendly platform makes it easy for library staff to create polished, engaging posts in minutes using free templates! Here’s how to make the most of it.

Step 1: Find the Right Template

Visit Canva.com and create a free account. Start by choosing a template that fits your goal. Canva has simple navigation on the left-hand side of the page and a search bar for each category. When you click templates and conduct a search, if you’re seeking specific dimensions, you can type “Instagram post,” “Facebook post,” or “flyer,” and the document will be sized correctly per format. If you’re looking for the right theme, you can also search topics like “library event,” “education,” or “community.” A good thing to keep in mind is that clean, simple layouts are best received by patrons. They should be able to look at this post and understand the message in a few seconds.

Step 2: Customize with Your Library Branding

Consistency builds recognition. Even if your library doesn’t have a formal brand guide, you can still create a cohesive look for your graphics. Customize your template by adding your library logo and, in some cases, using the same colors and fonts across your messaging. Keep the text large and easy to read. Not all posts need to be completely uniform, but tying your graphics together with your logo is a minimalistic way to add branding.

Step 3: Swap in Your Content

Templates have the design set, but all your own information will need to be plugged in. Add your event name & details with a registration link. If you have relevant photos, you can upload those or use Canva’s free image library. Be sure to double-check before downloading and posting that you’ve replaced each text box with your library-specific information. It won’t look like a polished and professional graphic if you post it with the “@reallygreatsite” tagline on the bottom.

Step 4: Make It Scroll-Stopping

The template is there to give you a starting point and speed up the design process. The additional details that you add will help make your post unique and stand out in someone’s feed. Use bold headlines, create a sharp contrast between the text and the background, and highlight key words like “Free,” “Today,” or “New.” Avoid any funky fonts that are hard to read at a quick glance. Plus, when designing on Canva, there are guidelines that show spacing distance to help beginners keep text and images spaced out evenly and keep the graphic from getting too crowded.

Step 5: Download and Post

Once your design is ready, proof it for typos and make sure you replace all the template information with your own. If you’d like a second set of eyes on it, Canva allows you to share a link and allow others on your team to collaborate. When it’s ready to go, click the share button in the upper-right corner and download as a PNG for the best quality. Then, schedule or share on your social media! You can even link your social media to your Canva account if you’d rather schedule directly from the platform.

Marketing your library doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. With Canva templates, you can easily create visuals that help your community discover everything your library has to offer. To save even more time, you can favorite and reuse templates or create “go-to” designs for recurring posts. One Canva template can become your weekly event post, monthly program highlight, or ongoing series. If you haven’t tried it yet, start small. Pick one upcoming program and create a Canva post for it this week. You might be surprised how quick and easy it is!
