LCBA Feature: Bayonne Public Library

On May 1, 2024, the Bayonne Public Library proudly reopened its doors to the public after receiving $1 million from the New Jersey Library Construction Bond Act, matched by $1 million from the City of Bayonne, and supplemented by remaining funds from the library itself.

These contributions supported a series of critical infrastructure upgrades and accessibility improvements throughout the historic facility. The most pressing renovation addressed the building’s 90-year-old boiler system, which was replaced with high-efficiency modern boilers. In conjunction with this upgrade, all asbestos-containing materials in the flooring, piping, ductwork, and boilers were professionally abated.

Key enhancements to accessibility include:

• A brand-new public elevator
• Full renovation of the Children’s Room, rebuilt from the studs up
• Construction of a ramp to the “new books” dais in the Lobby
• Replacement of the Circulation Desk, Reference Desk, and computer carrels for barrier-free access
• Installation of in-floor Ethernet and charging ports under every seat in the Reference Room and Lobby
• New furniture in the Lobby, Children’s Room, and Reference Room
• Restoration of the building’s exterior façade and front courtyard

Building on this momentum, Library Director Melody Scagnelli-Townley successfully secured an additional $2,165,900 through the Community Center Digital Connect Grant. This next phase of development will convert underutilized storage areas into three small, reservable meeting rooms, a family restroom, and a dedicated lactation space. It also includes a complete replacement of the roof and chiller system. The project is currently in the architectural phase, with construction anticipated to begin in Summer 2025.
