The Labor & Literacy Library program aims to build on the successful work developed through the NJSL+ Partners Literacy project, a collaborative effort between the New Jersey State Library and Plainfield Public Library, by supporting NJ Libraries as they provide assistance to their patrons seeking digital literacy skills, Adult Basic Education (ABE), English Language Learning (ELL/ESL), and job search assistance.

This program will streamline service and procedure with out of the box deployment, allowing for local programs to focus on what they do best:  Serving clients.

The program’s ethos is Central Support with Local Control, with materials, procedures, support, and professional development opportunities to help you provide the on-the-ground general and digital literacy and workforce skills services that your clients need — all with less overhead and less administrative workload.

The Labor & Literacy Library program will include:

  • Access to staff training on topics such as basics of adult education, teaching digital literacy, and providing career preparation assistance
  • Workshops-in-a-Box style webinars and videos that can be used to get started
  • Downloadable presentation materials for libraries offering training to their patrons
  • Monthly check-in meetings
  • Networking and cohort-building opportunities
  • Centralized support and unified branding of services through the program
  • And more!

All of this is designed to make sure all Libraries will be able to participate in the Labor & Literacy Library program no matter their current staffing and resource capacity. You do important work. We’re here to help.

About Julia Giantomasi

I've had opportunities throughout my career to coordinate marketing and social media for live events and small businesses across various industries. I've enjoyed keeping up with the trends and using social media to not only promote quality services but create a sense of community. As the PR & Marketing Coordinator for the New Jersey State Library I can draw from these experiences in order to provide tips and best practices for libraries handling their own marketing and social media. I hope that I can be a resource to libraries across New Jersey as they engage with their communities.
