NJSL’s Funding Information Center offers resources and training for individuals and nonprofit organizations looking for funding.
On-site Research Tools
NJSL has been a community member with Candid, formerly the Foundation Center, since 1974. Through our membership, we provide free, onsite access to Candid’s research databases:
Foundation Directory Professional
Provides detailed information on over 240,000 U.S. foundations, corporate giving programs, and grantmaking public charities, with links to financials and 990-PF tax returns. Search by name, EIN, location, subject area, types of support, and more. View profiles for over 27 million previously-awarded grants, including their purpose, amount, and recipient. Foundation Directory also includes data on funding for individuals, including scholarships and fellowships. Updated weekly.
GuideStar Pro
GuideStar provides information on the finances, leadership and missions of charities and nonprofits. Search by name, keyword, location, nonprofit type, subject area and more. Profiles include revenue and expenses breakdowns, contact information, links to 990 tax forms, mission statements, and governance information.

Training and Webinars
One-on-one tutorials on how to search the Foundation Directory Professional database are available upon request. Contact Leigh Clark, lclark@njstatelib.org, to schedule an appointment. While we welcome visits and reference requests, users must do their own research to find prospective grant sources.
We also provide virtual group classes on grants research, proposal writing, and other nonprofit management topics. Register for classes through our events calendar.

Print Collection
In addition to grant-related databases, the Funding Information Center also has over 1000 print resources including periodicals and books about grant writing, fundraising, and other nonprofit management topics. Additionally, we have a historical collection of New Jersey private foundation IRS 990PF forms on aperture cards for the years: 1978-1998. Current private foundation 990PF forms are available through Candid’s 990 Finder.
Search the Funding Information Center collection on the NJSL’s online catalog.
Collection Policy
Most of the Funding Information Center’s print collection can be checked out onsite at the New Jersey State Library or requested via interlibrary loan through your local library. Some material, like directories, periodicals, and Form 990 aperture cards do not circulate.
