One unique way that we help serve state employees and any patron interested in joining state government is by offering a robust Test Book collection. These test books provide guidance on taking civil service exams through testing strategies and practice test questions. We also support the educational needs of patrons by offering books on college entrance exams, high-school equivalency tests, and military and police exams.

  • Test books are purchased to assist applicants seeking employment in government at the local, county, state and federal level.
  • While the test books are not specific to New Jersey civil service job titles, those taking New Jersey civil service exams find them helpful.
  • The collection also contains a small number of test preparation books for college, graduate school, career certification and military exams.
  • The Research Library has approximately 1,200 books in this collection.

Collection Policy

The New Jersey Civil Service Commission is responsible for posting civil service jobs and administering standardized tests for job titles as required. The Civil Service Commission does not make old copies of tests available.

To provide the best possible alternative, the Research Library purchases test preparation materials from a national publishing company, the National Learning Corporation. While these exams are not specific to New Jersey civil service titles, we do our best to source equivalent practice exams.

We have a wide variety of test books including popular titles such as Investigator, Administrative Assistant, or Social Worker.

We also have books specifically for the Supervisory Test Battery and Management Test Battery.

To Borrow from the Test Book Collection

  • You must be a NJ State Library Card registered borrower to check out from the test books collection.
  • Test books may be borrowed for two weeks, checking out up to five test books at a time.
  • We do not circulate our test books to other libraries.
  • The collection is available in print, mostly in English.
  • A limited number of books are available electronically through eLibraryNJ.
  • Popular titles are purchased in multiple copies.
