Fade to Books is an innovative literacy program which offers a novel way to supply young boys with reading opportunities. This new initiative offers incentives for young boys and teens to read by receiving free haircuts through their reading.

The program recognizes the role of the barbershop as a community gathering space and the role of the barber as a mentor. By partnering libraries with area barbershops which have placed bookshelves with mini libraries within their shops, books can be placed in the hands of children to read as they get their haircuts, and to take home when they complete their visits to the barbershop.

Originally created by the Long Branch Public Library in partnership with five area barbershops, the program has expanded to include ten additional libraries:

  • Willingboro Public Library
  • Paterson Public Library
  • Atlantic City Public Library
  • Keyport Public Library
  • Old Bridge Public Library
  • Newark Public Library
  • Roselle Public Library
  • East Orange Public Library
  • Montclair Public Library

Over 1,000 books have been donated by Bridge of Books Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting the development of literacy skills. The Bridge of Books Foundation has committed to the ongoing support of the Fade to Books program.
