Social Media Trends for 2023

Home Social Media Trends for 2023

There’s always going to be an ebb and flow and some uncertainty when it comes to the social media landscape. When leadership changes course at some of the big social networks, or new unknown networks crop up, it’s ok to feel unsure and reassess what’s right for your library. Regardless of which apps are being used, something that will never change is the need for people to be social and connect. We’ve collected expert insights for what to expect in 2023 to inform you of how to best plan your social media strategy for the new year.

Prioritize and Build What You Have

Shiny new networks will come and go, but what’s really important is optimizing the accounts that you have worked so hard to establish and grow. It’s ok to try new networks if you feel like you have the resources to take it on and your audience is using this platform. But still continue to focus your energy on the legacy accounts that have a following. Remember to look at the data that is available to you on those networks to help form your social media plan for the coming year. What posts are getting the most engagement? Are people watching your videos? What time of day is peak for follower interaction? It’s always good to make sure you’re getting the most out of the accounts that you already have before investing time into something new that might not last.

The Future is Authentic

You might have noticed the rise in popularity of the app BeReal with your younger patrons. Although the app might not stick around in the long stretch, the sentiment behind it is legitimate. Younger people want more authenticity in the content that they see. Videos and pictures that are less edited and more “real” seem to resonate with followers more than the overly produced. Keep it real on your social media accounts by featuring employee spotlights, peeks behind the curtains of your processes or events, and personal recommendations or Q&A’s. Sprinkling relatable content in amongst informative content keeps a good balance and shows your followers that there are real people behind the brand at your library, which makes it easier for them to connect.

Collaborate with Your Team

This past year we saw a rise in short and live videos being the most engaging content on social feeds. Creating videos can be time-consuming, especially if you’re learning as you go. We understand that most libraries lack the resources to dedicate a lot of time to marketing and social media, so we encourage your staff to collaborate as much as possible to maximize bandwidth. You’ll be amazed at how many creative ideas can be executed just by inviting in different perspectives from the staff and volunteers at your library. Everyone has different skillsets and leaning on those to create fresh content will do wonders to strengthen your library community. Try having regular brainstorming sessions to keep marketing and content creation fun and an all hands on deck effort. And as always, remember the golden rule no matter what year it is, don’t put pressure on yourselves to be perfect on social media, just get out there and start creating!
