Thank you to those libraries that have updated and submitted their collection development policies and request for removal procedures, for the State Library to review against the requirements of the Freedom to Read Act. It is heartening to see so many libraries committed to intellectual freedom and respectful of the role of professional librarians in collection curation. If you’re not sure if you’re headed in the right direction with your revisions, feel free to reach out to NJSL. We’re happy to provide feedback at: Freedomtoread@njstatelib.org.
Please note that under the provisions of NJSA 18A:74-10 Compliance with regulations (related to State Aid), the State Librarian has the authority to reduce state aid payment for noncompliance with applicable statutes. NJAC 15.21-2.3 and 15:21-2.7 provide a percent reduction for noncompliance with applicable statutes at 100% of state aid.
We’ve received more than 170 responses to a recent survey on Public Library Building Construction needs. While the results won’t be surprising to anyone, it will be helpful to have timely data to back up anecdotal evidence. NJSL will develop a report to share with the library community based on the data provided. It promises to be interesting and enlightening.
