In our last blog we gave you ideas for making short-form videos for Instagram Reels or TikTok. Now, we’re going to dive into a new tool that can help you edit and create those videos! Instagram Edits was introduced in late April of 2025 as a competitive editing tool to CapCut, which is owned by TikTok and was disabled in the US for a short period of time this year when the TikTok bill hadn’t yet received an extension. Since this is a new app, let’s break down the features so you can decide if it will be useful for your library!

You might recall that Instagram Reels has always had its own editor, but it was somewhat limited in features. Instagram Edits is meant to be a more professional and comprehensive editor that can manage multiple projects, add special effects, utilize trending formats and offer more advanced editing techniques. Plus, Edits is directly linked to your Instagram account, so you can edit, finalize, and publish your content straight to Instagram or Facebook without jumping between tools.

The app provides a suite of essential editing functions like trimming and cropping, speed adjustment, filters and effects, music integration, and voiceover support. In a recent update, they added more custom cropping features, which will help your content fit different formats. One accessibility feature that really stands out is the automatic generation of multilingual subtitles. This can be particularly useful for libraries in bilingual communities.

Another aspect of the app that is useful for marketing teams with a complex posting schedule is the “idea” tab. This is a project management space where users can bookmark inspiring videos, add notes, plan video projects and organize multiple media pieces at once. This could allow multiple members of your library to login and work on projects simultaneously, since often marketing is an ‘all hands on deck’ approach!

Ultimately, Instagram Edits is a good start for a more advanced editing tool, however, there are still some features that CapCut offers that Edits does not. As the app continues to evolve, they could include pre-built templates and more dynamic tools. However, if your library uses TikTok more heavily and likes to create trending videos, CapCut might be a better fit. If your library focuses on Instagram and Facebook short-form videos, give Instagram Edits a shot! It’s very user-friendly and is seamless for posting to social apps under the Meta umbrella. No matter what editing tools you use, keep creating high quality content for your followers!
